This is our second look at this book. Among the fascinating subjects it covers is a chapter that provides a short review of the history of environmentalism. The following paragraph is quoted from this chapter. Further, in the coming nine weeks KF will include links to quotes in which Speth outlines nine threats to biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.

"Many reasons have been offered over the decades for sustaining the earth's biological endowment. The earliest and the one that seems to animate the Endangered Species Act, is the most challenging to our society and our habits of thought. It is a mere ethical proposition, namely, that we have ethical duties to the communities of plants and animals that evolved here with us. It is to Aldo Leopold that we must turn for this. In his Sand Country Almanac he launched what environmental historian Roderick Nask has called "one of the most remarkable ideas of our time: the belief that ethical standing does not begin and end with human beings."

The thinking expressed by Speth must, of course, be extended to include marine environments, creatures and sanctuaries. We will come back to these marine issues in the coming weeks.

KnowledgeFarm has issued over 70 newsletters since Bill Katavolos coined the name to reflect his vision of small rural learning centers tucked into the interstitial "left-overs" of circular irrigation fields on the great plains. KF subscribership has remained small and friendly - currently a master list of 33. Over the past year, about a dozen people decided it's not for them and dropped off the list while about the same number of new people signed on. For now, it is what it is, a weekly portrait of someone or someplace that seems to be making a difference for the health of the planet mixed with a collection of photographs I take along the way and quotes that I find particularly inspiring. This probably won't change much. I have added the Travelogue as a way to follow Rich Kurczak on his way to Africa and back and this section may grow as others contribute similar adventures.
